During the pandemic, I decided to start diving into fashion design. While I created a couple pieces here and there as a beginner, like pillows and small headbands… I always wanted to create more, dreaming of bigger and better things. I ended up opening my own Depop shop, which is an online platform where small designers can show case their ideas and designs and sell them for a profit.
I really started drawing inspiration from all types of things, from pieces I saw in an old Vivienne Westwood fashion show from Fall 1993, or even newer designs like ______. I started to design mood boards and gained inspiration from Harjuku Fashion from the early 2000s. Many of the girls would just dress esoteric, out of the ordinary that you wouldn’t normally see in American fashion.
I ended up making my first mini skirt from a deconstructed army jacket. I cut up the pockets on the jacket, used the lower half of the jacket as the material for the mini skirt and stitched the pockets on to them as well. I also cut up an old shirt to add the word Tokyo to emphasize the streetwear culture in Japan.
My design had so many buyers, and so many asks and I eventually sold it to a girl that lived in California. The small journey that I took to create my first designs.
